  • August 9, 2022 – The relationship between Employee Engagement, Psychological Safety, and DE&I—which comes first?

Approved for 1.00 SHRM PDC’s

In the 1990’s, Gallup developed the Q-12 assessment for measuring employee engagement. In the US, it gained momentum in the early 2000’s and today is in common use by the majority of mid and large-cap companies to get a sense of how much discretionary effort their employees are giving and why. In 2012, a manager from Google’s People Analytics department started Project Aristotle, a two-year project to learn the key elements of high performing teams and team effectiveness. After two years, group norms were found to be key to teams’ success. These are the unwritten and often unspoken rules guiding the behavior of the teams. Said differently, the team is more important than the individual achievements of the team members. However, who established the group norms and how much does the background, age, gender, race, ethnicity, disability or sexual identity and his, her or their feeling of fairness, feeling seen heard and valued, safety and belonging play into the team chemistry? In this presentation, we look at this subject from a different angle and present a relationship between diversity demographic dimensions, psychological safety, and employee engagement considering which is more foundational, which is more mid-tier, and which is more of a result of the right alignment, application of principles and dynamics of the team.

Armers has led company-wide DE&I Installations, training rollouts, and large-scale culture change initiatives both nationally and internationally.
